Regenerative therapy treatments: the vampire facelift

Regenerative Therapy for the face is an extremely well-known anti-aging and skin rejuvenation procedure also known as the “Vampire Facelift.” The reason Regenerative Therapy treatment for the face became known as the Vampire Facelift has to do with the fact that the treatment itself uses blood from a patient’s own body (it also has to do with the popularity of Vampires in American & Western culture!).
But the Vampire Facelift has also gained popularity because many celebrities and movie stars have underwent the treatment (such as famed Hollywood stars Kim Kardashian, Anna Friel, Bar Rafaeli, and others). Lots of patients also come to the True Laser Spa clinic having heard about it in the media and they ask all sorts of questions about it, especially about its proven abilities to eliminate wrinkles and restore skin elasticity, tone, and firmness. But they also arrive at our clinic under mistaken impressions from either misinformation or misunderstandings about it!

Platelet rich plasma – regenerative therapy – the vampire facelift

To help clarify misinformation and misunderstandings, we’ve written this article to help shed light on the Vampire Facelift (also termed “Regenerative Therapy” in this article and elsewhere).

A brief intro to regenerative therapy treatment

Regenerative Therapy was actually developed decades ago and was first used & validated for orthopedic surgery. It’s accumulated a huge body of research over the years proving its healing abilities for both cosmetic and other healing purposes. Specifically for the Vampire Facelift, Regenerative Therapy involves extracting blood from the patient and separating the desirable “Platelet Rich Plasma” from the blood in order to re-inject it into the face. Regenerative Therapy was not initially used for cosmetic purposes. At first, the extracted Regenerative Therapy would be re-injected into different areas around the body needing to be healed (without combining it with cosmetic fillers of course) and the injected areas would heal much more rapidly than normal.

About the actual “Regenerative Therapy”, it contains platelets which are tiny blood cells important in our body’s own clotting process. For instance, if you get a scab, a blood clot is formed and the platelets then release enzymes to enhance healing and implement tissue regeneration by attracting stem cells to repair the damaged area. Think of the yellowish-clear fluid that forms on a scab as this platelet rich plasma we’re talking about.

The same process is conducted for the Vampire Facelift. A patient’s own blood is extracted, usually the same amount as for a typical blood test. This blood is then inserted into a centrifuge machine which spins and extracts the plasma from the rest of the blood. This plasma which is rich in platelets (hence “Regenerative Therapy”) is then combined with certain cosmetic fillers, inserted into a syringe, and then re-injected into facial areas. The injections themselves are made strategically, in a certain pattern across the face and at particular points to enhance rapid skin healing and regeneration. It does this through increased collagen production and the release of fresh skin cells full of human growth factors. This results in an astonishingly younger, more natural, and more rejuvenated look.

The entire process can take just less than an hour, and the results gradually improve over the course of many months. The treatment is truly amazing and proven to work.

How the vampire facelift & regenerative therapy treatment works?

The Vampire Facelift is a completely non-invasive procedure which, as mentioned above, uses small injections of Regenerative Therapy combined with cosmetic fillers into strategic areas of the face.

Obviously, you’ll be required to conduct an initial consultation with a doctor before the procedure is conducted so we can go through your medical history in detail. We also try to understand your particular goals, study your bio-makeup, and make sure the procedure is appropriate for you. After that, a date would be set for the procedure and, usually, any Vampire Facelift procedure would consist of the following steps:

1- Patient Preparation: The area treated on your face would be comprehensively cleaned and prepared.

2- Strategic Facial Markings: The doctor would mark particular areas on your face that would need to be freshened, lifted, or rejuvenated. This would be done with a special pencil that makes temporary markings (which are wiped off the face easily of course!).

3- Blood Extraction: The doctor would then draw blood, usually from your arm, in the typical way you’d get your blood extracted for a normal blood test.

4- Separating & Isolating the Regenerative Therapy: The extracted blood is then inserted into a centrifuge machine and spun for approximately ten minutes or so. The purpose of the centrifuge is to spin the blood at such a speed that the lighter Regenerative Therapy would go one way, while the heavier blood would go the other way, thus separating the Regenerative Therapy we need from the rest of the blood platelets we don’t need.

5- Activation of the Regenerative Therapy: The separated Regenerative Therapy is then “activated” through a special process which stimulates the release of human growth factors which significantly increase collagen production (and release other human growth factors) once injected into the face.

6- The Application of Topical Anesthesia: If you request to have any sort of anesthesia, the doctor would then apply some numbing cream to your face and attempt to keep you as comfortable as possible during the rest of the procedure.

7- Regenerative Therapy- Filler Combination: The Regenerative Therapy is them combined with other cosmetic fillers and inserted into a special syringe.

8- Regenerative Therapy Injection: The doctor then injects the Regenerative Therapy combination into the strategic areas of your face.

9- Gradual but Incredible Results: The growth factors released into your face by the injected Regenerative Therapy will significantly stimulate the release of your skin’s stem cells. Basically, your skin is ‘tricked’ into thinking it’s been injured and that it should ‘heal’ itself with new, fresh, young, and awesome tissue. This process helps your skin to naturally release new collagen and create new blood vessels as well as new skin cells. Keep in mind results will be gradual and continue over the course of a few weeks to several months. You will definitely notice the transformation during that time!

How long does a regenerative therapy or vampire facelift session take?

As mentioned previously, Regenerative Therapy treatment generally takes less than an hour, usually anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour.

Who are good candidates for regenerative therapy & the vampire facelift?

Regenerative Therapy is treatment that comes from your own body. This means it’s extremely rare there would be any allergic reactions. And the combination of fillers can be put aside in case fillers don’t bode well for the patient (as is the case with the Vampire “Facial” which does not use fillers in its treatment). Therefore, Regenerative Therapy can be conducted for just about anyone wanting to improve the appearance and quality of their skin.

But specifically, Regenerative Therapy therapy and the Vampire Facelift can treat many things such as:

• Eliminate dark circles around the eyes
• Do away with Crow’s Feet
• Get rid of fine lines surrounding the mouth
• Treat dull, rough or grayish skin texture and tone
• Minimize acne scarring
• Diminish sun damaged skin
• And more!

Keep in mind there are certain exceptions as to who this procedure is NOT for. This includes those with:

• Blood related conditions
• Anemia
• Cancers related to the bone
• Cancers related to the blood
• It must be mentioned that patients taking blood thinners or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) should stop their medication a couple weeks before treatment and for a few days after undergoing the procedure per the instructions of your doctor.

What happens after regenerative therapy & the vampire facelift?

Generally, you’d need a little bit of recovery time after the Vampire Facelift or any other kind of Regenerative Therapy. Usually after the first day of the procedure, you may experience some minimal redness or tenderness on your face (close to the feeling of a sunburn). Rarely, you may experience light bruising. The redness you’ll experience right after the procedure will usually disappear during the second and third days post-op. You may notice some swelling also, which usually subsides by the third day. Finally, your skin will feel dry for the first several days or so, which can be minimized by keeping your treated skin well-moisturized.

It must be mentioned that although you may experience these light symptoms, you won’t necessarily undergo any significant downtime from your normal schedule or routine. In fact, with some like makeup application we can apply for you in our clinic, you’ll likely be able to return to your normal schedule directly after your procedure.

Expectations & results of regenerative therapy and the vampire facelift

You’ll start seeing noticeable results in just a few days after treatment and, within one to three months, you’ll see huge benefits. When it comes to individual experience, patients have reported results such as seeing fully refreshed skin they feel is significantly rejuvenated and more youthful.

How long does regenerative therapy and the vampire facelift last?

The total duration of results depends on the particular individual as well as the experience of your doctors, but expect your results to last anywhere between a year or two.

How to care for your skin after regenerative therapy?

The most important things are skin hydration and sun protection! Make sure to implement daily skin care treatment applying good quality moisturizers for your face as well as several applications of sun screen a day (30 SPF or higher). This is absolutely critical especially if you live in sunny areas or undergo the Regenerative Therapy/Vampire Facelift during summer.

How is the vampire facelift & regenerative therapy different from cosmetic dermal fillers?

There’s a huge difference between the two. Cosmetic fillers like Juvederm and Restalyne are made from substances that emulate what’s found under our skin and these fillers act like gels which “fill” in lines, folds, and wrinkles in the face. Your body absorbs this gel usually within 6-8 months depending on the filler so there is a constant need & frequency to repeat treatment.

In contrast, Regenerative Therapy enhances your body’s own ability to create its own natural production of collagen and skin tissue which naturally helps your face become younger, healthier, firmer, and rejuvenated. Moreover, Regenerative Therapy and the Vampire Facelift can be used in areas that dermal fillers are considered not safe to use on. Lastly, Regenerative Therapy doesn’t target particular lines or wrinkles on your face. Rather, it improves the overall look and quality of your entire face.
